Phantom Queen Goddess Morrigan Alignment £35

Now, before we go any further it is imperative that one thing be understood, otherwise what follows will be tainted by assumptions and false ideas. Morrigan has come down to us in our modern age with something of a bad reputation. She is generally considered a Goddess of blood, death and the battlefield. However, this was only ever half of her story. She was like the Valkyries; a psychopomp working to aid the transition from life to death. She also has her roots in bringing life and aiding in childbirth.

She is fearsome only in her aspect of the dark nature which all women have within their own shadow. Like the mother who will do anything to protect her children, so, Morrigan’s dark side is also protective one. Therefore she is a Goddess of cycles and of movement, not of stagnation and inertia retardation, as some would have it. The name Morrigan means 'phantom queen' (or 'great queen') and describes a Goddess from old Ireland that was very much associated with war, destiny, fate and death, as well as transitions and birth.

She was a shape-shifter and frequently appeared as a black crow, an ominous sign for those who saw her prior to battle. Legend has it that the Morrigan was in fact a triad of sisters, often named as Badb, Macha and Nemain, while the Morrigan is also remembered as the triad of the land Goddesses Ériu, Banba and Fódla. Such was her influence over the land of Ireland that it is from áariu that the word 'Eire' and 'land' ('Ériu-land'), developed into 'Ireland', in effect naming the country. She was a shapeshifter, her ravens/crows, the backdrop of mystic seers. They depict the dead, the living and the otherworld.
